We sometimes attribute human names to items that hold a dear spot in our lives…

I have a black SUV named Betty after this song

I also have a blue bicycle named Delilah

I’ve know people who have laptops that were named Harry Potter and Charley, as well as cars named Button, Lola and Mr. Big…

So here’s one for you people of the internets to answer. Do you give your cars, laptops, cell phones a name? If so, what are they, is there a story behind it?

    Ha! I saw your twitter and came to brag about Charley but I see you already beat me to it! I guess I’ll just have to leave you with this little tidbit: My car answers to, “The Sad Koala.” :)

    My car is Penelope Dreadful.
    My laptops were both named Trixie
    My hackintosh is named Mary and Shelly (one name for each OS)
    All my hard drives are end-of-the-worldy: Apocalypse, Ragarok, Eschaton, and so on.
    Handheld devices are old gods: Treo was Mictlantecuhtli, New iPhone is Xipe Totec, Thumb drives are Dagon and Azazathoth.

    My car is Anastasia – my MINI before her was Chelsea, my Jetta before Chelsea was Judy (Jettason). My laptop is MacRiah Scarey and my tiny point & shoot camera is named Dirk. My iPod is Sam and… maybe I should stop there. ;)

    My laptop is named Bananas, but it’s actually from a “family line”. My first ibook was named Herbert (after Herbie the Love Bug) and then when I got my macbook it became known as Monty (from Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo). Then my macbook got a lobotomy (the hard drive needed to be replaced), thus Bananas from (Herbie Goes Bananas).

    But I’m notorious for naming things. All my stuffed animals are named after Shakespeare characters and my musical instruments and other computers have literary references. :)

    My car has always been named Dude. The name hasn’t changed despite the changing of a green Astro-Van to a silver Saturn because I’ve always like that.

    I called my second iPod Lucky because my first one got stolen.

    I call my laptop either Lappy or Compy, after Strong Bad emails.

    My first car was “Gretchen”.
    My last car was “Betsy”.
    My current car is “Betty”.

    My last PC laptop was “StinkPad”.

    My truck is named Roger, as in Jolly Roger. It is solid black throughout. Since I moved and no longer require a front license plate, it now holds a skull & crossbones in it’s place. I also have my antenna ball from Pirates of the Carribean, which is another Jolly Roger.
    My laptop is Scooter II. The original Scooter is no longer with us. Both were named from the ABC minisodes “Scooter Computer & Mr. Chips”. Ironically, the computer was actually Mr. Chips & the boy was Scooter.

    My main computer is Jupiter, while my laptop is Mercury. Not so much after the planets, but more the Gods. Jupiter being the main system, the big boss. Messenger of the Gods, the speedy portable being my laptop.

    After the mythos in the novel Snow Crash, I had to name my iPhone: Enki.

    I don’t really call them by these names, but when they need names for domains and such… I try for meaningful symbolism.

    First car – Shaggin’ Wagon
    Second car – Jack for Jack Johnson, cuz it was smooth
    Current car – Guinness because it’s black exterior and tan interior

    Laptop – Luna Lovegood because it’s adorably nerdy
    iPhone – Delilah because she’s so sexy
    Kindle – Rosalind after the famous scientist

    I name everything. Seriously. But you knew that about me ;)

    My EEE lappy is called ‘Napoleon’. The stats surprised my seeing as I was expecting something that could only just surf the net and word process so I made a play on the Short man syndrome he supposedly had (He didn’t actually have it – He was average hight)

    My Desktop is called ‘Bernard’ – after Nursie from the 2nd series of Blackadder.

    We also have a rubber chicken called ‘Kamikaze’. I’m not sure how that came about

    Every laptop I’ve owned has been named “Hector”… kinda like my one aunt who always called her dogs “Prince”.

    My car (a black ’87 Chrysler Daytona Pacifica) is named “Dayna the Black Toner” (Yes, despite not being able to drive one, I actually do own a car).
