Check out this interview of Elly Jackson and her perspective on style and her role as a fashion icon. I think she’s a beautiful girl and has a very interesting sense of style and image she wants to portray on stage…

 

I see a lot of girls with the quiff but never with the clothes… ever..
I think a lot of girls just don’t want to look that much like a boy, so they don’t go there
Even though they admire it, they wouldn’t want to take it on themselves
Just like I could admire a woman in a dress, but god, I’d never wear one.

I learned about the Charles Phoenix Retro Slideshow from Jeff and Kelly of Vintage Roadside.

First off, I was tickled to visit the Ace Hotel. This boutique hotel was once a Howard Johnson and now is full of delightful modern and kitschy upgrades. I first learned of the hotel from Sarah Rhoads blog, she shot some lifestyle photos in the sister Ace Hotel in Seattle. Weeks later I saw pictures that Jean Aw of Notcot had posted and just knew I’d have to check the property out soon.

I wanted to visit the great couple behind Vintage Roadside after getting to know the company better through their roadtrip blog and twitter.

Jeff and Kelly were on hand at the Ace to sell their t-shirts sporting some fantastic vintage logos. Some of my favorites are below, including the new design of The Chi-Chi in Palm Springs that they unveiled last night that I bought!

Vintage Roadside also hosted a book signing for Charles Phoenix after his amazing presentation of a slice of his vintage vacation slides he’s picked up over the years. Many can be found in his books which you can order on Amazon.

I’ve been away from my blog lately due to a change in my work duties. I am working on redesigning the print & web imprint for my company (a huge change from admin & payroll duties!). There is a definite learning curve in doing this type of work all day.

I’ve been reading much more on design and the work has been filling a void I’ve had in the creative realm… This makes me wish I would have the time/money/energy to take some courses in design and coding. We all know my blog has been a hobby and I’ve tinkered with my role in the design and layout more and more, but I think it would be fun to do it more.

Color Theory for Designers, Part 1: The Meaning of Color 

Color in design is very subjective. What evokes one reaction in one person may evoke a very different reaction in somone else. Sometimes this is due to personal preference, and other times due to cultural background. Color theory is a science in itself. Studying how colors affect different people, either individually or as a group, is something some people build their careers on. And there’s a lot to it. Something as simple as changing the exact hue or saturation of a color can evoke a completely different feeling. Cultural differences mean that something that’s happy and uplifting in one country can be depressing in another.
