– Essentials

What are your purse/backpack essentials when you are traveling?

I keep a few items on hand (most of them are everyday items, others for just when I travel) to make life a bit simpler. Most of these apply to domestic and some international destinations. I am much more wary of theft outside of North America though…

  • I carry my passport in an oversized wallet. Most bars will take a driver’s license, but in case of an emergency I like to keep it on me.
  • I also will travel with a small amount of currency for the country I’m headed to for quick airport purchases (and surprise taxes or fees!) and a bit of US cash to have when I get back home (to get out of the parkade). I travel most often to Canada, so I’ll hit up an ATM and take out as much cash as I can to cover my expenses. That way I’ll save myself individual transaction fees from using my debit or credit cards.  Any currency left over I just take home and save for the next trip… Just carry a daily stipend on your person and the rest secure at your home base or hotel safe.
  • Keeping common meds in an old lady pill case comes in handy. Aspirin, allergy meds, lactaid, etc…  all expensive to buy on the fly. Keeping a few of each kind of med in a pill keeper makes you a walking pharmacy. I just keep a little slip of paper in one section which outlines each segment contents along with basic dose info so I don’t have to memorize it.
  • Expandable shopping bag. I absolutely love my turquoise Eddie Bauer shopper. It folds up simply without needing to know oragami, has a tab with a clip on it, a belt loop,  and the folded pouch zips shut. I can use it as my primary wallet/camera case since when folded it is the size of my Canon point and shoot and a fits my ID, a few cards and cash. Then I can throw it on a belt, or clip it to a belt loop. If you need to carry more you can expand it and still keep the zipper pocket stuffed with small items.
  • I almost always carry a bag big enough for a sweater or a change of shoes. Having a large purse can get heavy though, so I try to stick to messenger style bags so my shoulders don’t get tense from hefting too much weight.

What are some essentials that you keep on you when you’re touring around? Bandaids for blisters? Pre-made address lables for easy postcard mailing? Let me know!

– Makes me wanna be a dude

Phil, aka My Life as a Foodie, has branched out and produced a fan-freaking-tastic new show called Dude Food.

He’s all about good food, his bio states:

My name is Phil, and I love food.

No, seriously. I’m batshit crazy about it.

I love to cook it, eat it, think about it, shoot pictures of it, and write about it. I’m not a professional chef, but when I’m not working, I’m in the kitchen, or planning on being in the kitchen.

He’s pretty kick ass at sharing easy to make recipes of really good food. At least it looks good. Makes me want to be a dude and throw down with some pork and wings.

I might just have to anyways. I like to get my hands dirty when I eat!

I’ve gotta give props to the guys over at Should I Drink That and Brain Gravy for introducing me to Phil’s show in the first place.  Since he’s a local foodie and eats in blogger circles in LA I need to meet him in person!

– Label, label, label

Here are some packing tips I’ve come to utilize that makes my travel a touch easier.

  • I label everything. When you’re in the midst of security you really don’t want to be unsure as to what exactly the 6 tubes of creamy white stuff is. Also helps when you’ve gotten back from a trip and tossed your toiletries in a drawer for a few months… you’ll know easily what to grab for the next trip.
  • I have a quart size bag that came with my suitcase, it has a handle on it which makes it super easy to snatch up, put on my wrist, and move out of the way after screenings. Keeps my hands free to grab my laptop and shoes. I just walk into the terminal and then reassembled my stuff.
  • Solids. I don’t buy travel size products if its something I use on a daily basis and can be bottled in empty travel sized containers. The travel sized items I do buy are ones that are solids such as sunscreen, deoderant, moisurizers, and even some fragrances that can slip through security easily.

– Plan and pack

Image:taiyofj

How do you plan a trip? Do you plan out every detail or fly by the seat of your pants?

I always like to do a little research for my first trip to a new place, especially asking friends and family about the location if they’ve been there before.

Most important is figuring out weather trends to keep packing to a minimum… I’m notorious for packing way too many options, but I’m getting better at it.

What are your no fail travel tips for planning and packing?

– Baking on the brain… two

So let’s discuss baking and not following the recipe. It’s practically playing with fire. You can RUIN a dish by messing with the chemistry involved in baking… problem is I’m terrible with following recipes, I always get distracted. Either I miss an ingredient or the order of steps always gets tweaked….

This time the recipe didn’t involve too much to screw up. It’s bread pudding, traditionally stale bread and a custard.

Joy and Jill posted a video of them making this bread pudding (go watch it!) and I took the liberty to make it slightly more my own. She pointed out you can just toast fresh bread for the right consistency so I picked up a loaf of fresh Apple Amish Bread from a local bakery and the rest was history…

Banana Bourbon Bread Pudding, by Joy the Baker

Here’s how I changed it up, used the apple bread, so I peeled and sliced up two golden delicious apples, tossed them in cinnamon and sugar and placed those in between slices of toasted bread. I also substituted vanilla extract for the banana extract and may or may not have thrown in an extra bit of bourbon in there too… just maybe.

A few tweaks for the next go round, to toast the bread a bit less, I like the texture of having the toasted bread, but I felt this time it was a little too crunchy. Still delicious though!

I’d also layer it slightly different. I like having more of the bread in the custard before baking, I actually re-arranged my bread to get more down in the good stuff after I took the first picture.

All the kids in the pool

A little too much cinnamon and sugar… oops!

With a little ice cream love

I wonder what I should try next.. who wants to be my guinea pig?

– Baking on the brain

It’s all Joy’s fault.

I’ve had baking on the brain. I was planning a girls night in with my friend Kellie, so I just decided to take advantage of a few hours inside on a Friday night. I wanted to make Joy the Baker’s Banana Bourbon Bread Pudding and had just purchased a loaf of Amish Apple Bread… so some experimenting was going to be done.

I was planning out my shopping list late Friday afternoon and came across Dana from MADE’s post about Peach Cobbler just before I left for the store.

A light bulb turned on… I had a ton of fresh peaches from my friend Georgia’s tree, so I had to make both!

We ran to the store, picked up some supplies and got down to work.

Who needs two baked desserts in one night? We did!

It also helped that Kellie’s roommates had several friends over later in the evening, so they consumed most of the desserts and left me with a few portions to take home and clean dishes to boot! I do not intend to gain weight in eating all these delicious treats that Joy makes. My plan is to go to other people’s homes and bake, eat my nice sensible portion and leave the rest behind.

First…

Dana’s Peach Cobbler

I stuck pretty much to the recipe, used 7 small/med peaches. I used a slightly too large dish, so the crust didn’t quite cover all the peach filling, but it was delicious by all reports.

Just before heading into the oven

Just out from the oven, nice and bubbly

Plated up and looking delicious

Check back later this week  for the run down on the bread pudding, it was AH-MAY-ZING!

– Flashback Friday: Tom Petty

YouTube Preview Image

I hated Tom Petty’s music growing up (probably because I was freaked out by his Don’t Come Around Here No More video as a child). Then one day it hit me… his music is pretty much amazing.

Still my juvenile distaste didn’t prevent this music video from being imprinted in my brain when it was released… probably because I was 10 and obviously fascinated with the morgue. The song has had many meanings to me as I’ve gotten older, a pseudo anthem for my life in a small town in high school, representing a fleeting thing for a man in Indiana, the list goes on and on…
